Latham & Bond HR is delighted to collaborate with a leading automotive manufacturer in their search for a dedicated Health, Safety & Environmental Officer. This role is pivotal for those who are passionate about maintaining the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental practices. As a vital member of our team, you will be instrumental in implementing and enhancing health and safety protocols, ensuring a workplace that prioritizes safety, compliance, and proactive risk management.
Health and Safety Officer Responsibilities:
- Oversee and manage health, safety, and environmental systems to maintain compliance with legal standards and promote a culture of safe working practices.
- Handle the health and safety framework for a company with a £50 million turnover and approximately 300 employees.
- Develop and maintain Health, Safety, and Environmental Management Systems for the Group and Plant, aligning with statutory requirements and integrating industry-leading practices.
- Collaborate with Project and Engineering teams to assess and mitigate risks, particularly in machinery safety and imported risks.
- Oversee the compliance, testing, and assessment of equipment to ensure safe operation across all sites.
- Conduct PUWER assessments and serve as the designated PUWER duty holder.
- Perform ergonomic assessments in die casting and CNC machining operations, ensuring adherence to best practices and legal standards.
- Manage and maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications, providing expertise in environmental and energy management.
- Offer guidance and advice to site management on health, safety, and environmental compliance, ensuring continual improvement and adherence to best practices.
- Audit Health and Safety Management Systems, address non-compliance and implement strategies to prevent future issues.
- Regularly review risk assessments, ensuring they are current and reflective of best-in-class practices.
- Report on health and safety performance, engage with senior management, and conduct safety training sessions.
- Coordinate with external regulatory bodies like the HSE and Environment Agency, ensuring regulatory compliance and effective incident response.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead audits and enhance health, safety, and environmental metrics, ensuring group-wide adherence to legal and best practice standards.
- Manage compliance reporting and operational risk assessments, maintaining rigorous safety standards and operational efficiency.
- Act as the primary contact for PUWER assessments, ensuring all machinery and equipment are compliant and safe.
- Engage with senior stakeholders, reporting on safety performance and driving continuous improvement in health and safety practices.
- Investigate incidents thoroughly, employing a structured approach to prevent recurrence and enhance safety protocols.
Experience & Qualifications:
- Expertise in health and safety regulations, with a strong background in manufacturing safety management.
- Experience with environmental management, including ISO 14001. Familiarity with working within an environmentally permitted environment would be beneficial.
- Proficiency in ergonomic assessment, particularly in high-risk operations like die casting and CNC machining.
- Familiarity with ISO 50001 standards and experience managing these systems.
- Proven ability to work with regulatory bodies, including conducting compliance reporting and managing inspections.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of delivering training and driving safety awareness across all organizational levels.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proficiency in using technology and software relevant to health and safety management.
- A proactive, hands-on approach, capable of influencing safety culture and practices effectively across the organization.
